Effectiveness of chewing gum exercise upon gut motility among patients after open abdominal surgery

Postoperative patients often develop Paralytic Ileus which complicates their recovery. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of chewing gum upon gut motility among patients after open abdominal Surgery Methods: This study was conducted using a quasi-experimental, posttest only design at a selected Hospital, Chennai. The study samples (60) were selected using simple random sampling and assigned to control (30) and experimental (30) groups randomly. Data was collected using Gastrointestinal resumption indicator to assess gut motility. Results: Majority of the patients undergoing open abdominal surgery received general anesthesia (93.3, 93.3%), had NG tube (70%, 76.6%), epidural analgesia for pain relief (66.6%, 83.3%). Non-gastric disease (63.3%, 63.3%), undergone non-gastric surgeries (63.3%, 63.3%) and had received opioids for pain management (63.3%, 63.3%) in control and experimental group respectively. The duration of time for the return of bowel sounds was less in the experimental group (Mean: 8+3.7) when compared to the control group (Mean: 14+5.03 with a “t” value of 5.5 ( p < 0.001). Factors such as Gastric Surgery, the presence of NG tube, non-opioid pain medication had an association with earlier return of gut motility in patients after open abdominal surgery. Chewing gum exercise may be recommended for all postoperative patients after open abdominal surgery.

Studies on the macro-invertebrate community structure, composition with various weed communities in selected ponds of Bihar

The study was designed to assess the quality of three fresh water ponds of district Aurangabad, Bihar, during the period of one year from Dec 2014 to Nov 2015. The three ponds under investigation namely Pond I (Umgaa), Pond II (Ranipokharadeo ) & Pond III (Patalganga) have historical and religious value. The study was conducted with respect to the Physico-chemical parameters of pond water including Temperature, pH, TA (Total alkalinity), Free CO2, DO (Dissolved oxygen), EC (Electrical conductivity), Transparency, and BOD (Biological oxygen demand) by following the standard protocols. The study was also conducted with respect to the Physico-chemical parameters of pond bottom sediments/soil including pH, OC (Organic carbon), N (nitrogen), P (Phosphorus) and K (Potassium) to observe the nutrient status of ponds. The results of the data obtained in various seasons, were evaluated and compared for all three selected ponds to quantify overall pond water quality status of the area for its possibility of being utilized as aquaculture. The Relative abundance of Macro-invertebrate species recorded from all the three ponds was also quantified. Since a reciprocal and manifold relationship exists between the macro-invertebrate fauna and macrophytic weed community of the pond ecosystem,. the macrophytic weed infestation condition of the pond was also analyzed.

Student perception of using micro-project as a teaching method

Active learning has attracted strong advocates among faculty looking for alternatives to traditional teaching methods. Microproject has been recently introduced as an add-on teaching method. It has been selected to be part of the curriculum to inculcate interpersonal skills. In this study, the researchers aim to investigate students’ pre and post behavioral changes while learning chemistry through micro- project. This paper discusses the feedback on students’ perceptions regarding the implementation and effectiveness of micro-projects. Findings show that most of the students show the positive perception of using it as a teaching method and agree to learn using the same method in the future.

Persuade of heat treatment effect on metal matrix composites

The Al 7075 alloy matrix materials possess mechanical properties with the addition of B4C particulates as reinforcement. Liquid metallurgy route is used for fabricating composite workpiece. Composites were held for heat treatment process by subjecting to solutionizing followed by quenching in ice media for improving the mechanical properties. Then the specimens are subjected to artificial aging at a temperature of 130˚C for various time duration. The hardness properties are evaluated for the composite materials before and after heat treatment.

Effectiveness of scapular muscle strengthening in management of lateral epicondylalgia

Lateral epicondylalgia appears to be multifactorial in origin, while the clinical picture is fairly uniform. Furthermore, only 5% of the people suffering from tennis elbow actually play tennis, and therefore, the condition may rather be referred to as lateral epicondylalgia(LE). There are many studies done for physiotherapeutic management of LE. Ultrasound and wrist extensor exercises remain mainstay in management of LE. There are some studies suggesting relationship between scapular muscles & LE. AIM: To assess the additional effect of scapular muscle strengthening over conventional treatment in management of Lateral epicondylalgia. METHODOLOGY: Subjects who met with inclusion & exclusion criteria were divided into 2 groups. Experimental group was given scapular muscle strengthening exercises in addition to conventional treatment and the control group was given conventional treatment for LE. Grip strength measurement was done using Jamar's hand-held dynamometer & pain intensity and functional ability was scored using patient-rated tennis elbow evaluation(PRTEE) score on 1stday & after 3 weeks. RESULTS & CONCLUSION: Significant improvement was found in both the groups. Scapular muscle strengthening showed significantly more reduction in pain, functional disability and more improvement in grip strength than conventional treatment. Thus, scapular muscle strengthening must be included in rehabilitation plan of patient with LE.

saraNi – An IoT based pathfinder

“Internet of Things” means the interconnection of things – a person, buildings, vehicles, electrical and electronic devices, mechanical devices and so on. There are huge applications in this area like smart home, smart city, medical applications, Traffic management system etc. Now a day’s traffic congestion is a major problem which leads to the traffic jam in developing countries like India. Reaching the destination within the city limit is so unpredictable. It is necessary to analyze the traffic pattern in near real time. So it is necessary to develop an IoT based application with real-time data analysis to overcome the problem. In this paper, we present “saraNi – An IoT based pathfinder” is an application that is targeted to help daily commuters in reaching the destination from the source in the shortest and the fastest possible route. The application is indented to help the commuters using smart wireless sensor network. The application uses sensors that are placed in various junctions, which detects the congestions at the junction.
